About the New Neighbor Award
The New Neighbor Award is a component of Beneficial's nationwide Help for Communities program. This initiative provides support to locally based nonprofit agencies serving seniors, children, minorities and low-income families in the communities Beneficial serves. Programs supported by Beneficial include financial literacy, youth education, community enrichment, housing and economic development - "neighbors helping neighbors" in communities across America.
About Habitat for Humanity of Montgomery County
A local board of Directors governs the Montgomery Affiliate. We built the first home in 1988, and since have built 60. Home construction has allowed us to directly serve over 263 persons providing adequate shelter. We are currently building in the New Hope Community Village located on the Alabama River Parkway.
Habitat is not a give away program. Family partners pay a 20 year, interest free mortgage on their homes. Mortgage payments are deposited into a revolving fund that supports the construction of more homes.
Montgomery Habitat's major support has been from the community in the form of volunteers and money. Support also comes from our military community, social groups, civic organizations, and student work groups from local and distant colleges and universities.
Individuals and groups donate money, labor and construction materials and supplies. This "grass roots" support shows acceptance of Habitat's mission across all races, religions, and income levels. Habitat is teamwork for the greater good.
