HSBC supports initiatives that work to improve the quality of education through partnerships with organizations such as the Chicago Public Education Fund, Teach for America, the Foundation for Teaching Economics and the National Council on Economic Education.
Financial Education
HSBC’s Consumer Affairs department offers and supports financial education through a variety of sources in order to reach as many people as possible and provide them the tools to make informed financial decisions:
- YourMoneyCounts.com, our online guide to financial and credit education, is available in both English and Spanish. The site provides articles, tools and calculators designed to help people understand more about saving, spending and borrowing.
- Through our Financial Education Grant program, HSBC has supported 44 grassroots organizations with more than $5 million in grants to develop financial literacy programs in local communities, over the last five years.
- In partnership with the Center for Neighborhood Enterprise and its network of affiliate community organizations, 270 financial education workshops were held reaching over 7,000 people in 2007. This curriculum is designed to help consumers in the areas of credit, homeownership and managing money.
- HSBC awarded a $750,000 multi-year grant to the Society for Financial Education and Professional Development (SFEPD), which funds credit and personal money management training for more than 32,000 students over a 3-year period, beginning in 2005, at historically black colleges and universities nationwide. SFEPD administers the training sessions.
- The HSBC – Bennett College for Women Financial Empowerment Program provides a combination of scholarships and financial education for students and faculty.
- HSBC furthers its commitment to supporting community revitalization through our Volunteer Income Tax Assistance and Earned Income Tax Credit Initiative. HSBC's Earned Income Tax Credit program provided $597,500 in grants to 20 groups that will operate free tax preparation clinics during the 2008 tax season. In 2007, the clinics assisted 131,924 families.
